Animal Testing is where the properties of cosmetics products are tested on animals to measure levels of toxicity and the effects of its hypoallergenic properties, before entering global markets for human consumption.
These tests consist of skin and eye irritation tests where chemicals are rubbed onto the shaved skin or dripped into the eyes of restrained animals without any pain relief. Including, what is known as the “lethal dose” test where animals are forced to swallow large amounts of test chemicals to determine the dose that causes death. As well as, many other tests that end with killing of the animals that are tested on.
Over 7 million animals are tested each year and from this over 200,000 in total were killed in Australia alone. This number is continuing to grow due to the rise in demand and supply within the cosmetic field and the makeup industry. Including products such as, skin cream, perfume, lipstick, nail polish eye and facial makeup, shampoo and hair colour.
In contrast, there are other cruelty free beauty brands that release high quality and safe cosmetic products that steer clear from conducting any form of animal testing.
Therefore, it is important to do your research before selecting a product as each item you select has cost an innocent life.
